“Dayton Hyde has given us all a wonderful opportunity tot know what cowboying was really like in the old days in the high-dry West. ....” Tony Hillerman, author of Skinwalkers, A Thief of Time , and other novels. From Pastures of Beyond

“I have always admired Dayton Hyde’s ability to paint bold and vivid characters in his books. He writes about what he knows and loves best from his raw life experiences –cowboys, Indians, and wild horses.....” Kim Novak,

actress and horsewoman. From Pastures of Beyond

“Dayton Hyde is a rancher’s rancher and a naturalist’s naturalist. Yamsi is an exuberant, hard-fisted,

often humourous portrait of a rancher's life told the way it ought to be told.” Gretel Ehrlich

“Nowadays I think, all of us in the West should be listening to Dayton Hyde....(he) is telling us

things we need to hear, through his example showing us the way. We need to take heed.

This is indeed a fine book, and its time is here.” About Yamsi, by William Kittredge.

“Dayton O. Hyde is a national treasure.”– Roger Caras

“So joyously ornery, so damned funny....” –Los Angeles Times

Book Review of Don Coyote

“...It is too early to say whether the name Dayton Hyde

will go down in history but it is absolutely certain

that far in the future people will pick up his

books including the gem we now have

immediately to hand [Don Coyote], and

wonder about Hyde, who is as much

an American original as his

beloved Don Coyote.

Author and subject

were cut from the

same bolt of cloth

– red, white and

blue on one side,

earth tones on

the other.”

–Roger Caras

This photo is an example of a photo Hyde took while down on the ground to get the best view. Lloyd Lippi comes off Harry Rowell’s bull #13. He was uninjured. This became a Life Picture of the Week, and the bull was thereafter named Life Magazine.
